How Much Time Do I Need to Visit Sensō-ji Temple?

Most visitors spend about 1 to 2 hours exploring Sensō-ji, including walking through Nakamise-dori and the main temple grounds. At night when I visited, I spent maybe 45 minutes walking around and taking photos. It’s quite lovely at night. During the day, I didn’t stay long, but if you’re shopping you could easily spend a few hours in the area.

Visiting the temple grounds is completely free, making it one of the most accessible attractions in Tokyo.

No ticket is required to enter Sensō-ji Temple.

Can I visit Sensō-ji Temple Year-Round?

Yes, Sensō-ji is open year-round and can be visited in every season, from cherry blossoms in spring to winter illuminations and New Year celebrations. It is especially lively during festivals when the area fills with food stalls and decorations. I visited right before sakura season, and it was packed during the day.

Is It Crowded?

Yes, unless you go at night. Sensō-ji is one of Tokyo’s most visited landmarks, so it is usually crowded during the day. Weekends, holidays, and midday hours tend to be the busiest times, especially around Nakamise-dori.

What’s The Best Time of Day to Visit?

Mornings, especially before 9 AM, and after dark are the best times for serenity and peace. If you want to shop and see it super lively, head over in late morning or early afternoon.

Is it Safe at Night?

Most shops close, but I felt completely safe walking around the area around 10 PM on my very first night in Japan.

Can You Pray at Sensō-ji Temple?

Can I Use My Phone to Take Photos?

Absolutely. Modern phones capture imagery and videos well, though a DSLR or mirrorless camera will enhance the details and reflections even more. I will note that I also used my new DJI Osmo Action Camera, which is freaking awesome for filming 4k videos!

The Play By Play: Visiting Sensō-ji Temple

In this section, I’ll walk you through my experience visiting Sensō-ji Temple so you can get a realistic idea of what to expect on your own adventure.

Getting to Asakusa

I got off the plane from the United States around 6:30 PM, and by the time I got through customs, picked up my Shinkansen passes and Welcome Suica card, and took the train over from the airport to Asakusa, it was around 9:30 PM. My ~20 hours of traveling culminated with a visit to Sensō-ji Temple, my very first adventure in Japan. What a gem it was! I was thrilled to be in Japan and in disbelief that I was actually there.

Walking Over

After getting off my nearly hour-long subway ride from the airport, one of the first places I wandered through was Asakusa Nishi-sandō Shopping Street, a really cool covered shopping arcade with wooden floors located just a few minutes from Sensō-ji Temple. As you can see, I still had my luggage on me:

I found myself stepping into a world that felt completely different from anything I was used to. The lanterns, neon lights, kanji signs, and sounds of the city made everything feel almost cinematic, especially at night. Even before reaching the temple itself, the vibes in Asakusa already felt incredible.

Senso-ji Hozomon Gate

If you enter from the south side like I did, you’ll first come across the impressive Hozomon Gate, one of the main entrances to Sensō-ji Temple. The massive lanterns, traditional architecture, and glowing lights at night immediately make the temple feel grand and historic.

Senso-ji Hondo

The large main building at the center of Sensō-ji Temple is called the Hondo, or Main Hall.

This is the spiritual heart of the temple where visitors gather to pray, offer incense, and experience traditional Buddhist customs.

Sensō-ji Pagoda

The highlight of Sensō-ji Temple for me was easily the five-story pagoda. At night, it becomes incredibly vibrant and beautifully illuminated, almost unreal looking if you’re visiting Japan for the first time like I was.

Seeing the pagoda glowing against the dark Tokyo sky honestly felt like one of those moments that finally makes it sink in that you’re actually in Japan.

There are quite a few angles to take in, so I recommend walking around and taking them in.

My Hotel in the Area

I stayed at Richmond Hotel Premier Asakusa International, which ended up being an excellent base for exploring the area. The hotel was within walking distance of Sensō-ji Temple, Nakamise shopping street, restaurants, and multiple train stations, making it incredibly convenient after long days of exploring Tokyo. Staying in Asakusa also gave me the chance to experience a quieter, more traditional side of the city compared to areas like Shibuya or Shinjuku.

Sensō-ji Temple is one of the most beautiful in all of Japan. It’s especially vibrant and stunning at night. If you follow my Japan itinerary, you’ll visit this Asakusa Temple as your very first activity like I did. It really set the tone for my trip and showcased Japan’s history and beauty.
