The best time to visit depends on what kind of trip you're planning.

Summer (June–August) is ideal for hiking, lake days, and sightseeing in warm weather—expect festivals, open-air concerts, and alpine beauty.

Winter (December–February) is perfect for skiing, snowboarding, and cozy mountain villages—especially in places like Tyrol or Zell am See.

Spring and Fall (April–May, September–October) are quieter, more budget-friendly, and still beautiful, with mild weather and fewer tourists.

I visited Austria in early June, and it was an incredible time. The weather is moderate, and hikes in the Alps and Dolomites are perfect this time of year.

Everything is relative right? Austria can be moderately expensive, especially in cities like Vienna or ski resorts.

Expect to spend around €80–€150/day on average for mid-range travel (accommodation, meals, attractions).

Budget options exist too, like guesthouses, grocery stores, and free walking tours.

Trains and public transport are efficient and fairly priced for getting around.

I found prices to be not too bad in early June.

I recommend packing for variety, as Austria's weather and terrain change by region and season.

• Layers are key: weather can shift quickly, especially in the mountains.
• In winter, bring warm coats, gloves, boots, and thermal wear.
• In summer, opt for light clothes, but keep a rain jacket handy.
• Good walking shoes are essential for city strolls and alpine hikes.
• Bring a power converter: Type F (also works with Type C and E)

Driving in Austria is generally straightforward, safe, and scenic, making it a great option for travelers who want the freedom to explore charming villages, alpine lakes, and dramatic mountain passes at their own pace. However, there are a few important rules and tips to keep in mind before hitting the road.

Road Conditions & Infrastructure

Austria has well-maintained roads and highways. The Autobahn (motorways) and major roads are in excellent condition, and even rural roads are usually paved and easy to navigate. Road signs are clear and follow international symbols, though they're typically written in German—so brushing up on basic signage can help.

Do You Need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

If you're from the EU or EEA, your regular driver’s license is valid.

If you're from a non-EU country (like the U.S., Canada, or Australia), you should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license.

Toll Roads & Vignette (Motorway Sticker)

To use Austria’s motorways and expressways, you must purchase a vignette (toll sticker). When I went to Austria, I purchased a 10 day pass, which can be done here: https://shop.asfinag.at/en/

You can buy it at gas stations near the border or online (digital vignette).

Options include 10-day, 2-month, or annual stickers.

Fines for not having one are steep—so make sure it’s visible (or digitally linked to your plate).

Driving Rules to Know

Here are some general Austria driving rules to follow:

• Drive on the right side of the road.
• Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
• Headlights must be on in low visibility or at night.
• Drinking and driving laws are strict (the legal BAC limit is 0.05%).
• Winter tires or chains are required from November 1 to April 15 in snowy conditions.

Overall, I found driving to be pretty easy. However, I cannot stress enough to STAY on the right lane, unless you're passing a car. I got pulled over for driving in the left lane! Also, be sure to purchase the driving pass in the link above, I heard the fee for not having it is pretty hefty.

Absolutely—Austria has some of the cleanest tap water in the world, often sourced directly from alpine springs. You can safely drink from taps and many public fountains.

I mostly filled up my 3L hiking water pack from the hotels I stayed in.

Here are some traditional Austrian dishes:

• Wiener Schnitzel – Perhaps Austria’s most iconic dish, this breaded and fried veal (or pork) cutlet is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and often served with potato salad or parsley potatoes and a slice of lemon.
• Tafelspitz – A beloved Viennese specialty made of boiled beef, traditionally served in broth with apple horseradish and chive sauce, and often accompanied by roasted or creamed potatoes.
• Käsespätzle – Austria’s version of mac and cheese. These small egg noodles are tossed with melted cheese and topped with crispy fried onions. It’s especially popular in the Alpine regions.
• Gulasch – Inspired by Hungarian cuisine, Austrian goulash is a thick, slow-cooked beef stew seasoned with paprika and onions. Often served with bread or dumplings.

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it’s handy to carry a bit of cash for small purchases or in rural areas.

ATMs are easy to find and reliable.

I suggest holding on to about 100 Euros in your wallet, just in case.
